  5. The University of Iowa Hawkeyes are happy to announce the incoming recruits for the 2023 season. The class has 21 commitments (20 freshman, 1 JuCo) and is ranked 7th in the B1G and 40th nationally. Top Recruits WR DeMaurice Slone 5-10 177 Jr Minnesota State CTC (Fergus Falls MN) 4.0 of 5.0 [Speed] Slone chose to keep it in the family when he picked the Hawkeyes over in-state rival Iowa State. He will step in as the main receiving target in 2023 FS Rashard Pitts 6-0 203 Fr Woodbury Central (Moville IA) 2.0 of 5.0 [Zone Coverage] Pitts is the top freshman recruit in the class. He will likely be competing for the starting job in 2023 if he is not redshirted. CB Marcedes Payton 6-0 177 Fr Durant (Durant IA) 1.0 of 4.5 [Zone Coverage] Payton will join a young CB rotation looking to replace graduating senior Benjamin Parris OG Anthony Maxwell 6-7 300 Fr New Holstein (New Holstein WI) 1.0 of 4.5 [Run Blocking] Maxwell will look to step in and join sophomore OT Mike Brown to help bolster a sub par offensive line unit Offensive Recruits QB Kaden Gant 6-0 185 Fr Crestview (Crestview FL) 1.0 of 3.5 [Hybrid] RB Levi Reeves 5-11 191 Fr Ankeny (Ankeny IA) 1.0 of 3.0 [Power] FB Darius McDonald 6-1 224 Fr Olympic Heights (Boca Raton FL) 1.0 of 3.0 [Pass Blocking] TE Andrew Abrams 6-1 204 Fr Riverside (Oakland IA) 1.0 of 4.0 [Receiving] WR Curtis Valentine 6-0 199 Fr Liberal (Liberal MO) 1.0 of 3.5 [Target] WR Richard Jordan 6-2 168 Fr Belle Plaine (Belle Plaine MN) 1.0 of 3.5 [Speed] OG Javier Elizondo 6-6 318 Fr Baker (Baker LA) 2.0 of 4.0 [Pass Blocking] OT Steve Cantu 6-5 326 Fr Big Lake (Big Lake MN) 1.0 of 3.0 [Pass Blocking] Defensive Recruits DT Marquise Moss 6-6 293 Fr Mayer Lutheran (Mayer MN) 2.0 of 3.5 [2-Gap] ILB Da'Quan McClain 5-11 243 Fr Godby (Tallahassee FL) 1.0 of 3.5 [Will] ILB Victor Lord 6-1 216 Fr Martin County (Stuart FL) 1.0 of 3.5 [Will] OLB Ayden Brito 6-2 216 Fr Ritenour (Overland MO) 1.0 of 3.5 [Blitz] OLB Elliot Spencer 6-3 215 Fr DeLaSalle (Minneapolis MN) 1.0 of 3.5 [Coverage] OLB Brayden Burr 6-1 227 Fr Banquete (Banquete TX) 1.0 of 3.0 [Coverage] CB Sebastian Moody 5-9 181 Fr Coronado (Lubbock TX) 1.0 of 3.5 [Zone Coverage] SS Maxim Starkey 5-11 211 Fr Huntsville (Huntsville TX) 1.0 of 3.0 [Man Coverage] K Larry Franks 6-3 163 Fr Hawley (Hawley MN) 1.0 of 3.0 [Accuracy]
  6. Finishing 2-10 (1-8 B1G) the 2022 season for the Iowa Hawkeyes was more lows than highs, but there were some bright spots from young players on both sides of the ball. Freshman running back Kedaveon Vaughn started every game and finished the season with 1100 yards and 17 touchdowns. Freshman tight end Alec Roswell and freshman wide receiver DeShawn Simpson stepped in to help lead the receiving corp in catches and touchdowns. The defense was lead by sophomore defensive end Joe Hanley who lead the team with 5.5 sacks and sophomore defensive tackle Jacob Colbert who lead the team with 8 tackles for loss. So with the 2022 season in the books for the Iowa Hawkeyes, let’s look ahead at the top priorities for the 2023 season. Stepping up by the signal caller Otto Kirkland will be the returning starter but after a less than stellar season he will be challenged by RS freshman Ryan Corbin. Look for Corbin to win the starting job for 2023. Improve in the trenches Iowa ranked last in the B1G in o-line rating and that needs to be an area of emphasis in 2023 if Iowa wants to improve their offensive output. Returning starting offensive tackle Mike Brown and incoming freshman offensive guards Javier Elizondo and Anthony Maxwell will look to make an impact on the o-line play Moving the chains Iowa ranked next to last in 3rd down conversions at only 30.9%. They will need to be better on 3rd down to score more points and help keep their defense off the field. Splitting the uprights Freshman kicker Mayer Abbrederis converted just over 50% of his field goal attempts (15/29) in 2022 and will need to be much better to help the Hawkeyes win close games in the 2023 season.
  7. A win over Cinci would be exceeding my expectations after how Iowa's season ended. Being back in the tournament is good enough for me.

  9. Same. Losing to Michigan in OT on the road - I guess that's one of those loses you can feel okay about because we kept it closer than expected...but still hurts because it was so close.
