  10. The Iowa Hawkeyes held their annual spring game at Kinnick Stadium last weekend. Here is what we learned heading into the 2023 season. Ryan Corbin will be the starting quarterback Redshirt Freshman Corbin far outshined Senior Otto Kirkland in the spring game. While it is true Corbin was throwing to the top two Iowa receivers he was efficient and productive with 3 touchdowns to only 1 interception. Unfortunately for Kirkland he continued where he left off as the starter last season throwing for more interceptions than touchdowns. Look for Corbin to be under center in the fall. The underclassmen showed up on defense There are certainly question marks on the defensive side of the ball as Iowa will be playing a lot of young guys. But a few the incoming freshmen had an impact during the game. The Gold team was led in tackles by freshmen OLB Ayden Brito and FS Rashard Pitts and freshman CB Marcedes Payton recorded an interception for the Black team. This bodes well for a defense that will be relying on freshmen to contribute this season. The O-No Line Last season Iowa ranked last in the B1G in OL Rating at 3.9. The OL Ratings for the spring game - 3.9 and 3.0. That’s not good. Heading into the 2023 season the o-line will be a major concern for the Hawkeyes. It looks like the offense now has more weapons than last season but the o-line will need to perform better for the offense to have success. Not-so-Special Teams With expected starting kicker Mayer Abbrederis sidelined with an injury the kicking duties fell on freshman kicker Larry Franks. Unfortunately Franks is still looking for his first college make as he went 0-3. Abbrederis is expected to be ready at the start of the season which is good news for the Hawkeyes. All in all the spring game showed glimpses of an improving Iowa team. It remains to be seen just how much improvement they can make in 2023 in the tough B1G conference.
  11. Iowa City, IA - The Iowa Hawkeyes have released their schedule for the upcoming 2023 football season. Coach wrigleyfan and the Hawkeyes open the season at home against Conference USA opponent Western Kentucky. Iowa then the Iowa State Cyclones in the annual Cy-Hawk rivalry game. After a bye week the Hawkeyes open their B1G conference schedule week 4 on the road at State College vs the Penn State Nittany Lions. Iowa's other road games also present big challenges as they will travel to play at Minnesota (week 5), at Purdue (week 7), at Ohio State (week 10), and at Illinois (week 14). Iowa's home schedule is also filled with quality opponents as Kinnick Stadium welcomes Nebraska (week 9), Michigan State (week 11), Northwestern (week 13), and Wisconsin (week 16). Here are some fun facts for the 2023 Iowa Hawkeyes football schedule: After hosting Iowa State week 2 Iowa's next home game is not until week 9 against Nebraska after 4 road games and 2 bye weeks Iowa will play in 4 rivalry/trophy games - Iowa State (Cy-Hawk trophy), Minnesota (Floyd of Rosedale), Nebraska (Heroes trophy), and Wisconsin (Heartland trophy) Historical facts heading into the 2023 season Last B1G championship - 2016 (8-0; 13-1 overall) Last season with winning record in B1G play - 2020 (6-3; 9-4 overall) Last season with a winning record - 2020 (9-4) Last bowl win - 2020 (Gator Bowl)
