[2020] Week 3 B1G Players of the Week

3 posts in this topic

Welcome to the latest edition of B1G Players of the Week. Week 3 is already in the books; it was a great weekend for college football fans across the country, as many ranked matchups and other exciting games took place. We also saw a lot of great individual performances from B1G players, let's see how they did exactly.

WR Joseph Thurston, Michigan State (9 for 120 yards, 2 TD vs Missouri)

On Saturday Evening we witnessed a very exciting game between two undefeated teams in East Lansing where the Michigan State Spartans hosted the Missouri Tigers. Both offenses were playing an efficient game, but eventually it was Michigan State who came out on top with a 34-31 victory. WR Joseph Thurston was the star of the offense, as he gained more than 100 receiving yards and caught two touchdowns. With this victory SlinkyJr's Spartans advanced to a 3-0 record and they begin conference play after their bye week where the stars on their offense will have to step up if they want to continue this season's success.

Honorable mentions: QB Matt Jones, Purdue (24 of 32 for 308 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT vs Syracuse); WR Tyler White, Penn State (6 for 127 yards, 1 TD vs West Virginia)

DE Carlos Washington, Michigan (2 Sacks, 1 Safety, 5 Tackles vs Fresno State)

After escaping with a win against NC State the Wolverines were aiming for a more convincing performance against Fresno State last week. They delivered exactly that performance, as Michigan stomped the Bulldogs 51-14. The offense scored touchdown after touchdown while the defense managed to contain Ryan Harris&Co. fairly well. DE Carlos Washington was an absolute nightmare for the Bulldog offense, as he sacked Harris twice; one of them occurred in the end zone, so Washington was also responsible for a safety. This victory should silence those who questioned Michigan's rightful place as a top 10 team in the polls (for now at least). The Wolverines continue their campaign against BYU this weekend. Which Michigan team will we see: the one that struggled against NC State, or the one that played great football against Fresno?

Honorable mentions: DE Khairi Bryant, Ohio State (1.5 Sacks, 5 Tackles vs Indiana); CB Devin Little, Michigan (INT, 4 Tackles, TD vs Fresno State)

K Garrett Strange, Northwestern (3/3 FG made from 43,38,46 yards vs #20 Wisconsin)

One of the conference games played in the B1G on Week 3 was Northwestern-Wisconsin where the Wildcats were considered a massive underdog by experts. It is true that that the Badgers won without any difficulty (24-9), but the Wildcats were not looking bad at all. Quarterback E.J. McGuire passed accurately and kept the ball safe, and the defense made an alright effort to limit Wisconsin's offense. However, so far the brightest spot on this Wildcat team has been true freshman kicker Garrett Strange. He already converted several 40+ yard field goal attempts this season, and he stayed on that course against Wisconsin with a perfect 3/3 record. New Head Coach robcarlson77 is not in an easy spot with this young Northwestern team in the tough B1G West, but if some other underclassmen can get on Strange's level then maybe the Wildcats can find some success in 2020.

Honorable mentions: K Ben Hall, Ohio State (4/4 FG made from 20,34,28,40 yards vs Indiana); K Logan Callaway, Maryland (3/4 FG made from 41,23,34 yards vs #18 Minnesota)
