Tiger! Tiger! Burning Bright

#1 Auburn wins the championship with a decisive win over #6 TCU, becoming the kings of the 10th CFBHC season.

Pack Up The Playoffs

The Packers steamrolled the playoffs, defeating the Dolphins by 20 to win Super Bowl IX; this is their second title in three seasons.

Black or McLean?

Following the Giants trade-up to #1, will they take Rice QB Eric McLean or Auburn QB Marcus Black?

[2022] [Week 12] Warrior Write Up: #14 Hawaii hosts #7 San Diego State

In Week 12 of the 2022 CFBHC season, the nation's eyes will be set in on Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii on Saturday Evening as 7-1 :hawaii: plays host to 8-0 :sdsu: in what looks to be the  :mwc:  game of the year. Both team's have their aspirations set on a playoff appearance similar to what the Air Force has been able to do as of late. The loser very likely goes to the Las Vegas Bowl to play a PAC-12 opponent.

Fresh off the bye and having had 6 weeks since the last home game the Rainbow Warriors are ready to defend Aloha Stadium. The last home appearance was a 10 point loss vs currently 6-2 #16 Oklahoma State. Biggest wins are at SMU and at Nevada earlier in the year. Hawaii looks to make a major statement in the progression of the program.

SDSU's biggest Ws are home vs Stanford, Utah, and Toledo. Having had 7 out of its 8 games at home this year, the Aztecs will have their first true road test here in Week #12. Their only road game was a 42-21 W over  MWC Mountain Division leader Colorado St (4-4, 4-1). Edmondson hit 300+ PASS yds, Garrett got his 100+ RUSH yds and Payton with 100+ REC yds, a common them we'll look at. Let's dig into some of the key matchups.

    QB Matchup

    Bradshaw v Bradshaw
    Aikman v Kelly
    Manning v Brady

    Edmondson v Youngblood?

In a game that is likely to determine the MWC champion, we have a couple of vaunted offenses led by the conference's #1/#2 in total yards in TDs under center. Last year's game featured a 34-24 W in favor of Hawaii in San Diego. JT Youngblood led the way with 349 total yards and 3 TDs (including a 47 yard scamper) while Edmondson putting up 290 yards and 3 TDs of his own. This game will go down to which ever QB can find his groove and keep the offense humming. As you can tell by the stats below these guys, although much different styles, are very similar when it comes down to Total TDs and Total Yards. Over the season they are only separated by 31 total yards and are tied with 24 TDs.

    David Edmondson - 2,458 passing yards, 23 TDs / 2 INTs, 69.2%, 1 Rush, 1 Yard, 1 TD, 1 YPC, 2459 Total Yards, 24 TDs
    J.T. Youngblood - 2,051 passing yards, 18 TDs / 4 INTs, 66.9%, 52 Rush, 377 Yard, 6 TD, 7.25 YPC, 2428 Total Yards, 24 TDs

SDSU Front 7 vs Hawaii OL

Similar to the matchup in @acewulf excellent SMU vs Hawaii Texas Technical write up, the Hawaii OL has another huge test in front of them Saturday Evening. In the SMU game they kept DT Aveau 6-0 281 Jr 4.5 / 5.0 in check and off the stat sheet. They'll need to do this again so that JT and Fraser can keep the offense rolling.

Here's how the :sdsu: Front 7 has done in regards to sacks:

    • DE McKinney 6-1 243 (Sr) 5/5 [Contain] - 6.5 sacks
    • DT Spear 6-4 289 (Fr) 3/5 [1-Gap] - 5.5 sacks
    • DT Watkins 6-2 295 Sr 4/4 [2-Gap] - 2.5 sacks
    • OLB Joaquin Haney 6-3 224 (Fr) 2.5 / 4.5 [Blitz] - 2.5 sacks

The :hawaii: OL who will look to slow down that tough DL:

    • LT Yeager 6-2 295 Sr 4/4 [PB]
    • LG Worley 6-5 322 (So) 3.5/4 [RB]
    • C Combs 6-2 289 (Jr) 3/3 [PB]
    • RG Weathers 6-3 275 (Fr) 3.5/4.5 [RB]
    • RT Lamb 6-2 258 (So) 3/4 [RB]

SDSU Passing Attack vs Rainbow Warriors secondary

:sdsu: WR Zion Payton 6-1 191 (So) 3/4.5 vs  :hawaii: CB Brian Bonds 5-11 203 (So) 4/5

It's no secret that 6-1 191 3/4.5 (SO) WR Zion Payton is leading the conference in REC YDs (874), T-2 with 7 REC TDs and T-1 in RECs (55). He and Edmondson have been on an absolute tear this season. They have to continue this in Honolulu to ensure a victory. Dating back to the start of the 2021 season this Hawaii secondary has allowed only 2 QBs to hit the 300 YD mark in the 23 games over that span. Andre Webb of SMU last season and Ian Baldwin of OSU this year.

This season they've only allowed 3 WRs to hit the 100 YD mark (2 of them in that OSU game). Payton has hit that mark 5 of the last 6 games and the other being 98 yards. It's no coincidence that the 98 yard outing came in SDSU's closest win of the year 27-24 at home vs (now 2-7) Utah and that his 65 yard game happened vs (now 5-3) Stanford, also at home in week #2. The trend here is keep Payton under 100 yards and you have a shot at knocking down the Aztecs.

SDSU Rushing Attack vs Rainbow Warriors LBs

:sdsu: RB A.J. Garrett  6-1 189 (So) 3/5 [Speed] vs :hawaii: ILB Ivan Bentley 5-11 216 (So) 4.5/4.5 [Will] /

A.J. Garrett is 1st in the :mwc: in YDs (928), 2nd in TDs (13) and 3rd in YPC (5.87). He's hit the 100 yard marker 6 times and in the last 3 games. Also has 5 games with multiple rushing TDs. On the other side Ivan Bentley is 7th in tackles (35), T2 in INTs (4), and T1 in Defensive TDs (2). OLB Leon Hickman 5-11 220 So 3 4 [Blitz] has 22 Tackles, 4 TFL and 2 Sacks of his own. This will be a huge matchup to determine if SDSU can stay balanced or if Hawaii can keep them one dimensional.

    Keys To The Game

So excited for this game...had it circled all season long. Just glad both teams have lived up to the hype all season. Great article, too.

The above Keys to victory look just about right: I would add that SDSU has a chance to create some turnovers as well by getting some pressure on JTY and causing some poor throws. I think that SDSU MIGHT have the advantage here slightly, and @pumph has been slow-playing his team's chances a bit. Man, I love this Hawaii team though. Who knows...I'll say UH 31-34 SDSU...
