Hoosier Daddy?

The last undefeated team in the Big Ten is... Indiana?!?! The Hoosiers went on the road and dominated Wisconsin en route to a 31-17 win.

Wegrets as QBs Wheeled Out For Season

Jets QB Erik Wegert severely ruptured his PCL on TNF, and Titans QB Thomas Wheeler tore his rotator cuff Sunday, significantly hurting the hopes of both teams for 2023.

Horned Frogs SteAMRALled

#6 Oklahoma State took it to TCU, going up 28-7 at halftime and winning 38-14. RB Amral Brown came up huge with 142 rushing yards and 2 TD.

100-yard Curse Blackballed

The Colts hadn't had a 100-yard rushing game since Tony Peaks posted 150 and 2 TD in Week 17 of 2018. 2 games of JB Blacknall later, a 5-year drought is broken.

Catch Or No Catch?

Bengals WR Adrian Jankowski was furious that this catch on MNF didn't count, and it led to a tantrum and fine. Was it a catch? Depends on the perspective.

2023 Iowa Hawkeyes Spring Game - What We Learned

Recommended Posts

The Iowa Hawkeyes held their annual spring game at Kinnick Stadium last weekend.  Here is what we learned heading into the 2023 season.

Ryan Corbin will be the starting quarterback

Redshirt Freshman Corbin far outshined Senior Otto Kirkland in the spring game.  While it is true Corbin was throwing to the top two Iowa receivers he was efficient and productive with 3 touchdowns to only 1 interception.  Unfortunately for Kirkland he continued where he left off as the starter last season throwing for more interceptions than touchdowns.  Look for Corbin to be under center in the fall.

The underclassmen showed up on defense

There are certainly question marks on the defensive side of the ball as Iowa will be playing a lot of young guys.  But a few the incoming freshmen had an impact during the game. The Gold team was led in tackles by freshmen OLB Ayden Brito and FS Rashard Pitts and freshman CB Marcedes Payton recorded an interception for the Black team.  This bodes well for a defense that will be relying on freshmen to contribute this season.

The O-No Line

Last season Iowa ranked last in the B1G in OL Rating at 3.9.  The OL Ratings for the spring game - 3.9 and 3.0.  That’s not good. Heading into the 2023 season the o-line will be a major concern for the Hawkeyes.  It looks like the offense now has more weapons than last season but the o-line will need to perform better for the offense to have success.

Not-so-Special Teams

With expected starting kicker Mayer Abbrederis sidelined with an injury the kicking duties fell on freshman kicker Larry Franks.  Unfortunately Franks is still looking for his first college make as he went 0-3. Abbrederis is expected to be ready at the start of the season which is good news for the Hawkeyes.

All in all the spring game showed glimpses of an improving Iowa team.  It remains to be seen just how much improvement they can make in 2023 in the tough B1G conference.
