[2023] Longhorn Network: Texas Lands 2 Commitments, 1 Returnee in Transfer Portal

We’re live here in Austin, Texas as Coach Ape has just announced that he has brought in two new transfers to the Longhorns. This is seen as a win for the program as they needed some

depth at many positions and the portal was a great way to add to the team without having to use resources for their upcoming recruiting cycle.

Coach Ape detailed his process this year in a quick interview with LHN earlier today. “I was looking at 3 positions for transfers, DE, DT and Punter. I get those were the positions that needed the most immediate starter type players after this season.” This plan seems to have worked out well for Texas as Coach Ape was able to land the following transfers

DT Luca Gleason 6-6 293 So Jesuit (Tampa FL) 2.5 of 3.5 [1-Gap]

P Tristan O'Rourke 5-7 182 Jr Benson Christian (Benson MN) 3.0 of 3.0 [Power]

Let’s start with Luca Gleason. This True Sophomore will be able to redshirt this season as he transfer and will have 3 years of eligibility after that for the Longhorns. Gleason was with the Florida Gators before entering the portal and was one of the youngest players in the portal this season. When questioned about Gleason Coach Ape said, “Luca is a young man who I think will be starting for us after his transfer if we move to a 4-3 or if Gaines (DT Zion Gaines 6-1 297 (Jr) Sinton (Sinton TX) 5.0 of 5.0 [2-Gap]) declares for the draft. I’m excited because it think he could be close to his full potential after sitting out this year. He is a nice compliment for Singleton (DT George Singleton 6-1 329 Fr Banquete (Banquete TX) 1.0 of 3.5 [2-Gap]) and both should benefit from sitting this year out together and learning from Gaines.” Texas was purportedly in a heated battle with USC for Gleason’s services but he announced that he was coming to Austin on his Instagram saying, “Everything’s bigger in Texas, including opportunity. #Longhorns”

After this season the Longhorns only have one Punter on the roster and that’s Brian Babcock a 2.5/2.5 Jr. the Longhorns needed some competition and stability. That’s what Tristan O’Rourke brings to the table for them. Tristan is the nephew of U.S. Representative Beto O’Rourke and has ties to his family in Texas through him. He played in Minnesota for high school and went to Wisconsin originally. O’Rourke will have 2 years of eligibility after this transfer year where he hopefully will provide stability while the Longhorns find the long term answer for the punting position.

The Longhorns also released a statement on behalf of Lucas Beckwith after he informed the university of his transfer decision. Beckwith with his degree in hand will be transferring to Harvard to play out his final year of eligibility.

The AD also has announced that RB Ahmad Fleming 5-6 179 Sr Beckville (Beckville TX) 3.0 of 3.0 [Speed] has decided to stick with the program and will not be transferring out. LHN originally thought he might get some G5 or FCS interest but it seems that Fleming feels his best opportunity is back with the Longhorns. When asked Coach Ape said, “Glad to have Ahmad back in the RB Room. He’s a great voice to have and should really help Dontae Alford this season. He’ll have the opportunity to make an impact in the return game and possibly as a third down back.”

The Longhorns haven’t announced their post transfers depth chart yet but LHN will be the first to have the coverage when they do.

What about Gleason drew you to him?

Why do you think Ahmed stayed? Do you think he's going to have the impact he wants with Texas? Do you think he could have done more with another program? Do you still plan on having him return?
