[2023] ND INSIDER: Irish Secure Two Transfers

According to multiple sources, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have acquired a couple transfers via the transfer portal.  Both are required to sit out this upcoming season but both provide depth and options going forward.

C Nathaniel Shank 6-2 294 Jr Pensacola Catholic (Pensacola FL) 3.5 of 3.5 [Run Blocking] - Shank decided to transfer from Baylor University and his choice came down to Notre Dame and Kentucky.  It was thought that Kentucky had a slight advantage for his services after one week in the portal but he ultimately decided to sign with the Irish.  Notre Dame has one center currently on the roster (C Brandon Clevenger 6-3 245 (Sr) Mt. Diablo (Concord, CA) 3.5 of 3.5 [Pass Blocking]) but he's in his last year of eligibility opening up a spot for Shank to step right in and start after sitting out a year.

TE Ron Sampson 6-1 238 (Jr) Bastrop (Bastrop TX) 3.0 of 3.5 [Blocking] - Sampson got lost in the shuffle with TCU and decided to look for somewhere where he could get some more playing time.  SR tight end Jonas Grover will go pro after this season leaving Sampson to compete with and provide a blocking veteran alongside Khiry Bland (TE Khiry Bland 6-5 195 Fr Paxon (Jacksonville FL) 1.0 of 4.0 [Receiving]) who will also be sitting out this year on a redshirt.  Sampson should at a minimum see time in multiple tight end sets and short yardage situations for his lone season in South Bend.

Also in an update to a previous report of a couple players transferring out of the program, running back Kofi Ransom has completed the transfer process and will move on to Appalachian State.  He will sit out a year and then compete with Ajani Martin for the starting spot depending on if the Mountaineers bring in any other backs in recruiting.  And K Constantine Meier has notified the program that he intends to withdraw from the transfer portal and return the Irish.  He expects to backup Beckett Burke for his final season.

Did you feel like you might have had an inside track on Shank because he went to a catholic high school?

I don't think that was a deciding factor for him.  We had a connection since my first O-Line recruit at South Carolina happened to be from the same high school.  He followed Matthew throughout his career and has a Jets Grossman jersey.  I know he really liked Kentucky but Kentucky has a 1/3.5 recruit redshirting that he would have to compete with going forward where he would be the only center for us.  That played a part.  Plus I think Grossman put in a good word for me.

C Nathaniel Shank 6-2 294 Jr Pensacola Catholic (Pensacola FL) 3.5 of 3.5 [Run Blocking]

C Matthew Grossman 6-4 286 (Sr) Pensacola Catholic (Pensacola, FL) 4.5 of 4.5 [Run Blocking]
