[2023] Indiana Preview

Recommended Posts

Coached By: @Jamzz

DC/Roster: http://cfbhc.com/index.php?/topic/27289-2023-indiana-hoosiers-depth-chart-rs/

Key Players on Offense:

QB Rangi Grey 6-0 199 (Jr) Bishop Dwenger (Fort Wayne IN) 4.0 of 4.0 [Scrambling]

RB Kamar Blackmon 6-1 229 (Jr) Arsenal Tech (Indianapolis IN) 4.0 of 4.0 [Power]

C Ayden Washburn 6-4 263 (So) Paoli (Paoli IN) 3.0 of 4.0 [Run Blocking]

Grey is the engine that makes the Hoosier offense run. At times last year, Grey was very good. At other points, his play was forgetful. He finished the year with 2,118 Yards with 13 TDs and 9 Picks on 59.27% Completion for 126.43 QB Rating. He added 236 Yards and 3 TDs on the ground on the back of a 4.82 YPC. That's not great. But, with a year more of experience, the Hoosiers are hoping that Grey can be more consistent. If he is, Indiana can be competitive in most of their games. If not, IU could really struggle. Kamar Blackmon was next to Grey in the backfield last season. He had 1,058 Yards with 17 TDs on 4.56 YPC. Not a bad season by any means, but IU needs more from him. With Grey being as limited as he is, Blackmon has to pick up the load. He must get his YPC above 5.0 and get closer to 1,400 Yards. Otherwise, IU's offense may stall way more often than not. With IU wanting to run the ball as much as possible, C Ayden Washburn will play a big role in that. Blackmon loves to go right up the middle, and Washburn will be critical in that. IU will need holes punched in the DL, and Washburn will need to be the one punching them.

Key Players on Defense:

DE Vondrae Ledbetter 6-6 266 (So) New Deal (New Deal TX) 4.0 of 4.5 [Blitz]

DT Anquan Everett 6-7 290 Jr Delta College (Michigan) (University Center MI) 3.5 of 4.0 [2-gap]

ILB Jaden Durant 5-11 228 Sr F.J. Reitz (Evansville IN) 4.0 of 4.0 [Will]

Vondrae Ledbetter is the true star of the Defense. In 2022, he had 30 Tackles, 6 TFL, 8 Sacks, and 3 FR. Great freshman season. The strength of the IU defense is in it's Front-7. They will have to get constant pressure on the QB as a unit, and Ledbetter is the real key to that. He'll have to improve on his freshman year by getting double digit Sacks and double digit TFL. If he does, IU's defense can disrupt opposing offenses and give their offense the ball back. JUCO transfer Anquan Everett will take over for Jasper Kane (3/3) who had 9 Tackles and 2 Sacks in 2022. Everett is much better than Kane, he'll be key in stopping the run. Getting good DT play alongside great DE play makes IU's Defensive Line truly scary. Durant plays the MLB in this defense, and had 29 Tackles with 4 TFL and 2 PD. Not a bad season, but they'll need more. The secondary in Indiana is average at best. Durant and the DL will need to lead the way and force the QB into bad decisions early in the game.

Team Grades:

Offense - 56.98

Defense - 54.53

Special Teams - 60.25

Overall - 56.20

Schedule:

rpaiISW.png

I see wins against: Texas State, Kentucky, Rutgers

I see losses against: Ball State, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Maryland, Penn State, Ohio State, Illinois, Michigan, Purdue

For a record of: 3-9 (1-8)

Wins that could flip to losses: None

Losses that could flip to wins: Ball State, Wisconsin

I think IU is at best a 5-7 team. If they had BSU at home instead of Neutral Site, I think IU wins that game. The B1G is a tough place to be for lower end P5 teams, and IU certainly is that. At least the Hoosiers get to croot the G5 List this year.

I have higher hopes than I expected to have out of Grey since he looked really good in the spring game. Not that our defense is anything spectacular but it was the first team and they made improvements after an unexpected decent year last year. I think 6-6 is very possible to be honest, I know you like your team to beat us but that's a very winnable game imo and so is Wisconsin. A bunch of other games where we'll be the underdog I think are winnable as well, such as Michigan State, Maryland, and Purdue. Not that I expect a win out of any of those games but those teams all filled with unproven players. If we catch Tyson on a down game, or if he doesn't play up to last years standard, which I think is very possible, then I see us having the best shot in that game. The computer doesn't like Ohio State but based on their past performances I doubt we have a shot there.
