Devy Flexes His Guns in Miami

The Saints pull the upset over Miami. Saints QB Aaron Devereaux threw for 3 TD as the New Orleans defense held Miami to 5 rushing yards in the 31-27 victory.

Meep Meep

UTSA snaps #11 Rice's 26-game winning streak in CUSA games with a decisive 31-20 road victory. QB Justin Radford threw for 208 yards and had 3 total TDs.

Foster: Chicagoan for QB

Bears QB Mohammed Foster has come into his own as the team has jumped to a 6-3 start. Foster put up 102 on the ground, including a 45-yard TD, in a 20-10 victory over LA.

[2023] MAC Recruiting Review #1

Recommended Posts

As we have passed the first week in which high school prospects can announce their commitment, let’s take a look at how things shake out in the Mid-American Conference.

:wmu: Western Michigan :wmu:

Class Ranking: MAC - #1, National - #49

Commitments - 1

WR Mason Eckert 6-3 169 Fr Arizona Lutheran Academy (AZ) 2.5 of 5.0 [Speed]

Number one in the standings and now number one in the recruiting rankings. The coach @Pskeate and the Broncos staff continue to take advantage of their recent success and check in at #1 despite securing the commitment of only one player. WR Mason Eckert, could potentially line up for the Broncos as a true freshman. It will be interesting to see how the talented receiver does upon arriving in Kalamazoo, but he will likely be a difference maker for many years to come.

There have been rumors that the Broncos also have a silent commit in their class. It’s not known who that player is at this time, but many suspect it may be LB Cardarion Ware from powerhouse Muskegon High School.

:kent: Kent State :kent:

Class Ranking: MAC - #2, National - #53

Commitments - 15

K George Bush 6-3 169 Fr Mifflin (Columbus OH) 1.0 of 4.0 [Accuracy]

DT Terrence Phillips 6-7 288 Fr Slocomb (Slocomb AL) 2.5 of 3.5 [2-Gap]

FS Cory Petty 5-10 203 Fr Galileo Academy (San Francisco CA) 1.0 of 3.5 [Zone Coverage]

DT Janoris Guy 6-1 327 Fr Clearfield Area (Clearfield PA) 1.0 of 3.5 [2-Gap]

OT Cooper Iverson 6-6 292 Fr Escanaba Area (Escanaba MI) 1.0 of 3.5 [Pass Blocking]

OG Kai Shelley 6-3 314 Fr Greenhill (Dallas TX) 1.0 of 3.5 [Pass Blocking]

FB August Haney 6-0 206 Fr Cook (Adel GA) 1.0 of 3.5 [Run Blocking]

OLB Dahntay Harvey 6-2 225 Fr River Valley (Cheshire OH) 1.0 of 3.5 [Blitz]

DE Kai Huntley 6-3 257 Fr Inlet Grove (Riviera Beach FL) 1.0 of 3.5 [Contain]

CB Golden Goodwin 5-9 165 Fr Bentley (Burton MI) 1.0 of 3.5 [Man Coverage]

WR Leo Sheffield 6-1 205 Fr Archbishop McCarthy ( FL) 1.0 of 3.5 [Target]

OT Raphael Sheffield 6-3 282 Fr Apple Springs (Apple Springs TX) 1.0 of 3.5 [Pass Blocking]

ATH Usher Caron 6-3 223 Fr Tarkington (Cleveland TX) 2.0 of 3.0 [Blocking]

CB Omar Clement 6-2 173 Fr Cleveland Heights ( OH) 1.5 of 3.0 [Zone Coverage]

C Jonah Quinn 6-4 288 Fr Eastmoor Academy (Columbus OH) 1.0 of 3.0 [Run Blocking]

Coach @Traith and the Kent State Golden Flashes check in at #53, just a few spots behind Western Michigan. The Kent State staff was busy on the recruiting trail pulling in the most commits in the MAC while attracting players from all across the country.

There’s a lot of good depth thus far and many of these players will likely be contributors for Kent State, but will certainly benefit from a redshirt season as they adapt to college football. Kicker George Bush (I'll allow you to make your own jokes), the highest rated player, is one to keep an eye on. Kickers aren’t the sexiest additions, but can be a difference maker, especially in a conference like the MAC.

:cmu: Central Michigan :cmu:

Class Ranking: MAC - #3, National - #60

Commitments - 8

WR DaeSean Daniels 5-9 150 Fr Portage Central (Portage MI) 2.5 of 4.0 [Speed]

DT Tario Burgess 6-2 333 Fr St. Philip Catholic Central (MI) 3.0 of 3.5 [2-Gap]

OLB Devin Lentz 6-2 242 Fr Glen Lake (Maple City MI) 2.0 of 3.5 [Blitz]

OG Van Farris 6-3 336 Fr Berrien Springs (Berrien Springs MI) 2.0 of 3.5 [Pass Blocking]

TE Jamari Swain 6-1 200 Fr Glen Lake (Maple City MI) 1.5 of 3.5 [Receiving]

C Nicolas Cole 6-1 289 Fr North Branch (North Branch MI) 1.0 of 3.5 [Pass Blocking]

K August Keenan 5-7 154 Fr Alonso (Tampa FL) 1.0 of 3.5 [Accuracy]

QB Eric Stewart 6-1 200 Fr East Lansing (East Lansing MI) 1.0 of 3.5 [Pocket]

Checking in at #60 in the nation is coach @robcarlson77 and the Central Michigan Chippewas. The Chippewas stayed close to home with seven of their eight commitments coming from the State of Michigan. Similar to Kent State, there’s quite a bit of depth with these commitments, but WR DaeSean Daniels is the current gem of this class. The speedy receiver could see snaps right away, especially if CMU is able to keep Suggs around for his senior season.

:bgsu: Bowling Green :bgsu:

Class Ranking: MAC - #4, National - #66

Commitments - 2

CB Jarvis Coley 5-11 193 Fr St. Xavier (Cincinnati OH) 1.0 of 4.5 [Man Coverage]

OG Henry Schmitt 6-4 265 Fr Northridge (Dayton OH) 2.5 of 3.0 [Run Blocking]

Not a ton to write about for coach @PoopyRhinoPickle and Bowling Green as they secure commitments from just two players. In-state CB, Jarvis Cooley, is a highly rated, but raw talent who will almost certainly benefit from a redshirt year. Bowling Green is light on secondary depth, but likely needs to think big picture and let Coley adapt to the college game.

:ohio: Ohio :ohio:

Class Ranking: MAC - #5, National - #73

Commitments - 3

OT Marquise Hurt 6-2 327 Fr Padua Franciscan (Parma OH) 2.5 of 4.0 [Pass Blocking]

OT Jeremy Sutherland 6-7 322 Fr Garaway (Sugarcreek OH) 1.5 of 4.0 [Pass Blocking]

LS Shia Jeffers 6-1 247 Fr River Valley (Cheshire OH) 2.5 of 3.5 [Specialized]

Coach @bbates728 set out looking to bolster the offensive line and is off to a good start securing pledges from two of the top tackles in the State of Ohio. With their current Right Tackle departing after this season, don’t be surprised to see Marquise Hurt lining up to protect QB Austin Lowe. OT Jeremy Sutherland projects as more of a project, but has high upside.

:niu: Northern Illinois :niu:

Class Ranking: MAC - #6, National - #90

Commitments - 13

C Kyle Christy 6-3 295 Fr Thomas Jefferson (Bloomington MN) 1.5 of 3.5 [Run Blocking]

OG Louis McDowell 6-5 304 Fr Joliet Catholic (Joliet IL) 1.0 of 3.5 [Pass Blocking]

FS Jaeden Lovett 6-0 206 Fr Thomas Jefferson (Bloomington MN) 1.0 of 3.5 [Man Coverage]

SS Dominique Willingham 6-0 205 Fr Pine Island (Pine Island MN) 3.0 of 3.0 [Man Coverage]

DT Kulani Liuga 6-6 308 Fr Canton (Canton IL) 1.5 of 3.0 [1-Gap]

WR Chase Norton 6-4 196 Fr Roxana (Roxana IL) 1.5 of 3.0 [Target]

PR Adalius Cooper 5-9 168 Fr Scotland (Scotland PA) 1.0 of 3.0 [Specialist]

OT Freddie McFadden 6-4 278 Fr Perham (Perham MN) 2.0 of 2.5 [Run Blocking]

K Ned Roe 6-2 160 Fr Perham (Perham MN) 1.5 of 2.5 [Accuracy]

C Bob Brand 6-2 284 Fr Evarts (Evarts KY) 1.5 of 2.5 [Run Blocking]

OG Tristan Sohn 6-1 339 Fr Coon Rapids (Coon Rapids MN) 1.0 of 2.5 [Run Blocking]

TE Kana Clarke 6-3 243 Fr Pine Island (Pine Island MN) 1.0 of 2.5 [Blocking]

ATH Mike Pitts 6-1 233 Fr Suncoast (Riviera Beach FL) 1.0 of 2.5 [Run Blocking]

After a bit of a drop off from Ohio, Northern lllinois checks in with the 90th ranked class in the nation. With 13 commits, there’s a lot of bodies, but it appears not many players that figure to be true difference makers. NIU is currently struggling on the field and in a regime change. A once proud program has taken a big step back and will be looking to improve this class as the season progresses.

:ball: Ball State :ball:

Class Ranking: MAC - #7, National - #95

Commitments - 1

DT Josh Kern 6-7 284 Fr Hernando (Brooksville FL) 1.0 of 4.0 [2-Gap]

Coach @npklemm and his Cardinals were pretty quiet securing only one commitment this week. DT Josh Kern, is making the trek north from Florida to Muncie for the next four years. With both current starters scheduled to return next season, I suspect that Kern will take a redshirt before suiting up for the 2025 season.

:buffalo: Buffalo :buffalo:

Class Ranking: MAC - #8, National - #104

Commitments - 3

DT Makani Fuga 6-7 318 Fr Hanover Park (East Hanover NJ) 1.5 of 3.5 [2-Gap]

WR Simi Pinati 6-4 185 Fr Notre Dame (Lawrenceville NJ) 1.0 of 3.5 [Speed]

DE DeAndre Polk 6-1 241 Fr Montville Township (Montville NJ) 1.0 of 3.5 [Contain]

Coach @Jordan and Buffalo sit just outside the Top 100 after securing pledges from three prospects. The Bulls ventured into New Jersey and added a few solid depth players who figure to be contributors down the road. The staff will certainly be working hard to find some higher rated players that can have a larger impact on the teams future success.

:toledo: Toledo :toledo:

Class Ranking: MAC - #9, National - #106

Commitments - 11

SS Jaylin Alford 5-11 206 Fr Northwestern (Hyattsville MD) 1.0 of 3.5 [Man Coverage]

QB Otto Cassidy 5-11 205 Fr Jackson-Milton (North Jackson OH) 2.5 of 3.0 [Pocket]

ILB Tom Shoemaker 6-1 259 Fr Briggs (Colombus OH) 2.5 of 3.0 [Mike]

P Victor Mcclure 5-11 156 Fr Suncoast (Riviera Beach FL) 2.0 of 3.0 [Accuracy]

DE Anthony Stanford 6-5 253 Fr Pope John Paul II (Boca Raton FL) 1.5 of 3.0 [Contain]

OG A.J. Rawls 6-2 275 Fr Northview (Bratt FL) 1.0 of 3.0 [Pass Blocking]

DT Richard Fontaine 6-2 322 Fr Garaway (Sugarcreek OH) 1.0 of 3.0 [2-Gap]

DE Tom Ledford 6-3 260 Fr Gibsonburg (Gibsonburg OH) 2.0 of 2.5 [Blitz]

ILB Kaholo Aiga 6-3 242 Fr Wayne Trace (Haviland OH) 1.0 of 2.5 [Mike]

RB Damien Spillman 5-10 177 Fr Joliet Catholic (Joliet IL) 1.0 of 2.0 [Speed]

WR Jared Rollins 6-2 220 Fr Williamsport (Williamsport MD) 1.0 of 2.0 [Target]

Speaking of a once proud program, the struggles for Toledo have stretched from the football field to the world of recruiting. The Rockets secured commitments from 11 players, but there’s not much in the way of top end talent with this crop of commits. With their history of success and being in talent rich Ohio, the Rockets must do better if they hope to stay a contender in the MAC.

With it being my first year recruiting, I can tell I have a lot to learn.

I’m in my 5th season and feel like I’m just now starting to figure it out.

I have to be honest I think I got lucky with some of the recruits I got, i was surprised to get some of them. Although I'm very happy with my turn out this year for the young bloods and looking to seeing them play within the next few seasons
