Mountain West Bowl Preview - Week 13

Recommended Posts

Projected Bowl Matchups for the Mountain West Conference (as of Week 13)

Las Vegas Bowl (#1 MWC vs #6 PAC12)

San Diego State vs Cal

The Aztecs are in the MWC driver's seat, having knocked off Hawai'i and Fresno State.  They'll need to avoid any hiccups down the stretch, and win the CCG, but at this point, they would be favored to do so.  Cal currently looks to be the favorite for this slot, but with several more weeks of conference play, there are many other possibilities that could present themselves.

New Mexico Bowl (MWC vs CUSA)

Hawai'i vs Rice

Neither Hawai'i nor Rice seem likely to qualify for their respective Conference Championship Games, but the selection committee for each conference will gladly thrust these ranked, talented teams into their #2 bowl slots ahead of their unranked, CCG runners-up.

Hawai'i Bowl (MWC vs BYU)

Fresno State vs BYU

BYU has a pre-arranged agreement with the Hawai'i Bowl (if follow real life), and a matchup with a ranked Fresno State team is about as glamorous as this bowl could possibly get, so this matchup makes a lot of sense for the organizers of the bowl.

Idado Potato Bowl (MWC vs  MAC)

Boise State vs Central Michigan

Both conferences can field whoever they want in this game, based on geography and matchup, and it helps keep costs down for the Mountain West to keep Boise home this bowl season.

Armed Forces Bowl (MWC vs B1G)

Colorado State vs Minnesota

Colorado State could easily be in the Conference Championship game, yet only be the 4th or 5th-best team in the conference.  This is the one of the bottom bowl options for the Big Ten, and Minnesota currently would be among those in the running for this spot.

Arizona Bowl (MWC vs Sun Belt)

Air Force vs Louisiana-Monroe

Flip a coin between Air Force and Nevada for this spot right now, as the last official bowl lock for the Mountain West.  The Sun Belt may struggle to fill all of their bowl ties, but this one is a given for them.

Waiting by the Phone

With all of the conferences' bowl ties filled (there's an option for them to get into one other, but the Pac12 and B1G will both have enough bowl-eligible teams to fill it themselves, there's one MWC team left to sit and wait out the numbers game.  A bowl season without this Nevada team seems highly unlikely, and this team could easily state their case with a 7-win season.  There almost certainly will be a spot for a 7th Mountain West team; we just will not know where until more of the picture is revealed.
