[2023] Season in Review: Bowling Green

Recommended Posts

Coach: @PoopyRhinoPickle

Pre-Season Projection: 1-11

Final Record: 7-6 (5-3), 2nd in MAC East

I had very little hope for the Falcons coming into the year. They didn't have much talent, and were forced to start a lot of youth on defense. And their start certainly seemed to confirm my beliefs. But, Coach PoopyRhinoPickle came in and the team transformed into a real competitive team. They finished 7-3 after starting 0-3. They had a shot to win the East after defeating Ohio, but were unable to pull it off.

The Falcons went 1-3 against their OOC Competition. The Week 0 loss to Marshall was a surprise to me at the time, and even more now with how this team finished. They lost a super close game to Utah State, and then had their doors blown off by the Hurricanes late in the year. But, they had a great 4 game win streak from Weeks 7 to 11, including wins over Ohio and Toledo. Their Week 13 loss to Akron essentially knocked them out of MAC East Contention. They ended up in the Alabama Bowl facing the In-State Troy Trojans. The Falcons grinded out a tough close win to finish 7-6.

Key Players

QB A.J. Coyne (SO) - 292/11 3,313 Yards 57.14% 24 TD 8 Pick 123.97 QB Rating

RB Calvin Alexander (SR) - 164 Carry 669 Yards 7 TD 4.08 YPC

WR Brandon Lockhart SR - 83 Rec 1,044 Yards 9 TD 6 Drop

WR Sawyer Waters (FR) - 58 Rec 819 Yards 7 TD 7 Drop

DE Maximus Avila (JR) - 15 Tackle 2 TFL 6.5 Sack

DE Quincy Williams FR - 21 Tackle 6 TFL 7.5 Sack

OLB Micah Bean (FR) - 38 Tackle 5 TFL 4 Sack 1 INT 2 FF

CB Keandre Williams FR - 17 Tackle 6 PD 3 PD

Coyne was a star once again. He's not always the most efficient, but he pulls the offense kicking and screaming with him. Without a consistent running game, the offense revolves him. Calvin Alexander never had a good stretch this year. But, he did have some solid games where he was important to the team's success. Brandon Lockhart and Sawyer Waters were one of the most productive WR Duos in the conference. They combined for over 1,850 Yards with 16 TD, but had 13 Drops. If they were a little more reliable with their hands, this offense could have been really good at points. Maximus Avila and Quincy Williams were a constant presence in the opposing backfield, combining for 8 TFL and 14 Sacks. Micah Bean was a great all-around player in the middle of the defense. He was a playmaker that the Falcons have been missing for a while, and he looks to be the guy going forward. Keandre Williams had a fantastic year, getting 6 Picks and 3 PD. Like Bean, the Falcons haven't had a good Corner in a long while, so having him now is huge for this defense.

Impact Recruits

CB Jarvis Coley FR (1.0/4.5)

WR Uterius Randolphs JR (3.5/4.0)

OG Jonathan Eastman FR (3.0/4.0)

Keandre Williams gets some help in Jarvis Coley. I'm not sure what PRP will do, but it would be very hard to not start both of them. Uterius gives Coyne some much needed help out side. Lockhart and Waters were good this year, but their drop Numbers show their limits. Eastman gives the Falcons an impact, high level 4-Year starter on the OL. Another tool to help Coyne.

Season Awards

CB Keandre Williams - Defensive Freshman of the Year

OLB Mich Bean - All-MAC 1st Team

CB Keandre Williams - All-MAC 1st Team

DE Quincy Williams - All-MAC 1st Team

WR Brandon Lockhart - All-MAC 2nd Team

In theory we’ll be a better team next year than this year so hopefully we can keep punching above our weight and that will translate to more wins. We’ve got a good young defense that I’m pretty excited about.

He’s a stat sheet filler that has a real bright future.
