[2023] Season in Review: Buffalo

Recommended Posts

Coach: @Jordan

Pre-Season Projection: 8-4

Final Record: 5-7 (4-4), 4th in MAC East

I thought Buffalo was in for a great season. The East looked weak, and Buffalo had a roster I felt was worthy to taking the 2nd Spot in the Division. But, they got off to a horrendous start. It took a Mid-Season Scheme Change to put this team back in the hunt for Bowl Eligibility. Buffalo is certainly the biggest disappointment on the season in the MAC.

The Buffaloes went 1-3 against their OOC, with their lone win being against UMASS. That win put them at 5-5 on the season, with a very winnable game against Louisiana Tech to get to 6 Wins. But, they faltered there and were then blown out by the Broncos in their final game. They did win 5 out of 6 in the Middle of the Season, and looked good doing it.

Key Players

QB Levi Thompson (JR) - 161/253 1,950 Yards 63.64% 12 TD 5 Pick 140.08 QB Rating  273 Rush Yards 4 Touchdown

RB Alec Self (JR) - 270 Rec 1.354 Yards 15 TD 5.01 YPC

WR Jake Shackelford (JR) - 36 Rec 576 Yards 5 TD 2 Drop

OLB Alexander Moffett SR - 49 Tackle 4 TFL 6 PD

ILB Raymond McCain (SR) - 38 Tackle 2 TFL 2 FF

CB Laquon Boston SO - 17 Tackle 6 Pick 7 PD 1 FF

Thompson got off to a horrible start, before getting very good over the past 2/3 of the Season. It wasn't quite enough to get this team to Post-Season play. Alec Self was the most consistent player on the offense. When Thompson struggled early, Self was the lone guy carrying the offense forward. Shackelford was the best receiver, but he could only do so much in this offensive gameplan. Moffett is great in coverage, and did all he could to limit opposing receivers over the middle. He did get in the backfield a little, but his strength is in coverage. McCain is a run stopper, through and through. Laquon Boston definitely broke out this year. After his freshman year of being fairly quiet, he was anything but. Getting 6 Picks, and breaking up another 7, Boston was everywhere for the Bulls Defense.

Impact Recruits

ILB Robbie Orlando JR (3.5/4.0)

TE Darronte McClain FR (3.0/4.0)

SS Lamar Browne FR (2.5/4.0)

OLB Robert Culver FR (1.5/4.0)

CB Nathan Anthony FR (1.0/4.0)

The Bulls went out and got some replacements. Orlando is a two-year replacement for McCain. The Bulls Offense has some good young pieces, but they've desperately needed a TE. McClain is a blocker first, and that works just fine for the Bulls Offense. He's a 4-year starter. Lamar Browne will be forced into starting year one as well, and it's just another weapon in that secondary. Robert Culver's impact year one will be a tough decision for the coaching staff. It will be hard for the team to not start him, he'd give them an immediate boost to their pass rush. Nathan Anthony should probably sit a year, then would spend one year with Boston, and you'd have two Pro Caliber guys at Corner at the same time. That's not common in the MAC.

Season Awards

CB Laquon Boston - All-MAC 1st Team

RB Alec Self - All-MAC 2nd Team
