[2023] Season in Review: Kent State

Recommended Posts

Coach: @Traith

Pre-Season Projection: 3-9

Final Record: 3-9 (2-6), 5th in MAC East

The Flashes entered the season with some big concerns on offense. But, even with that, I thought a weak East could be a potential path for a Bowl Game. That did not happen. The offense was plain bad at times, and the defense was disappointing at others. The Flashes couldn't often put a full game together.

Kent State went 1-3 against their OOC, with blowout losses to Missouri and Kansas. Their lone win came against Liberty. They took down Akron and Bowling Green in conference, two teams would compete for the MAC East lead late in the season. Kent State had the opportunity, but scoring fewer than 20 points per game will not win many games.

Key Players

QB Cameron Hare (SO) - 200/373 2,277 Yards 53.62% 12 TD 14 INT 108.01 QB Rating 61 Rush Yards 3 TD

RB C.J. Williams (SO) - 200 Carry 939 Yards 8 TD 4.7 YPC

WR Ashton Hannah JR - 43 Rec 574 Yards 5 TD 5 Drop

TE Mark Ashley JR - 46 Rec 574 Yards 3 TD 3 Drop

DE Geno Mason (SO) - 15 Tackle 2 TFL 5 Sack

ILB Cooper Merritt (SO) - 60 Tackle 2 TFL 2 Sack 2 PD 2 FF

ILB Dwayne Felder (FR) - 29 Tackle 2 INT

OLB Abraham McCormack SR - 25 Tackle 1.5 Sack 1 INT

Hare struggled again in his 2nd Year as a starter. He threw more Picks than Touchdowns, and completed under 54% of his passes. He limited the Flashes Offense all year long. Williams' numbers don't jump off the page, but he spent a few games carrying the offense as much as he could. They were in a couple games that they wouldn't have been without him. Hannah and Ashley were the top dogs in the receiving game, combining for over 1,100 Yards with 8 TD and 8 Drops. Geno Mason lead the team with 5 Sacks, while Cooper Merritt was the best player on the defense. Dwayne Felder was a great sidekick to Merritt and McCormack brought pressure off the edge.

Impact Recruits

K George Bush FR (1.0/4.0)

TE Abraham Bartlett FR (1.0/4.0)

WR Makai Little FR (1.0/4.0)

LS Alex Seavy FR (1.0/4.0)

The Flashes didn't get a ton of high end talent, but they filled their roster with 3.5 guys. Raising the floor of the talent on the team is a big step in the right direction. Getting a Pro Caliber Kicker is always a huge improvement. Bartlett is a bruising blocker more of a receiver, but he still improves the talent on the offense. Little brings much needed life to the outside, as the Flashes have never had a receiver as good as him.
