[2023] Season in Review: Ohio

Recommended Posts

Coach: @bbates728

Pre-Season Projection: 10-2

Final Record: 8-6 (6-3), 1st in MAC East

I thought the Bobcats had a great opportunity to get to that 10-Win tier. Their schedule set them up nicely to get to that place. They did not make that point, but they still won the East and had a shot to win the MAC. You have to consider that a success.

The Bobcats went 2-2 against their OOC. They had a surprising loss to Colorado State, and were outgunned by Vanderbilt. They did beat down Arkansas and narrowingly escaped against South Alabama. They started off 3-0 in Conference Play, before a surprising loss to Bowling Green in Week 10 and lost 2 games later against Central Michigan. They won out their regular season schedule to finish 6-2 in the MAC and won the East. They lost big to Central Michigan in the MACCG. They then lost the Heart of Dallas Bowl to the WKU Hilltoppers. The season didn't end the way they wanted it to, but winning the East is certainly something to be proud of.

Key Players

QB Austin Lowe (JR) - 344/565 3,909 Yards 60.88% 31 TD 10 INT 113.57 QB Rating

RB Mike Cazares (JR) - 199 Carry 919 Yards 9 TD 4.62 YPC

TE Miles Hooker (FR) - 76 Rec 1,127 Yards 8 TD 3 Drop

WR Jordan Barnes JR - 88 Rec 1,084 Yards 10 TD 7 Drop

DE Nicholas Blackwell JR - 31 Tackle 8 TFL 7.5 Sack

OLB Paul Boykin SO - 29 Tackle 4 TFL 4.5 Sack 1 FF

OLB Adriel Frias (SO) - 43 Tackle 4 TFL 1 FF

FS Richard Bright (SO) - 32 Tackle 4 INT

Austin Lowe was excellent this year. He threw for nearly 4K Yards, and limited his Turnovers pretty well given his volume of pass attempts. He is a stud, and should have a bigger national footprint next year. Mike Cazares filled his roll nicely. He wasn't asked to do what Jeffrey Flowers was, but he did very well with his carries. He finished with 919 Yards and 9 TDs on 4.62 YPC. Certainly a good season. Miles Hooker had a phenomenal year, posting over 1,100 Yards and 8 Touchdowns. He had one of the best individual receiving performances on the year. Jordan Barnes had a great year too, getting over 1K Yards and 10 TDs. Nicholas Blackwell and Paul Boykin teamed up very well on the edge, combining for 12 TFL and 13 Sacks. They were a constant nuisance. OLB Adriel Frias brought some pressure on the other side, and between this 3, most QBs had to get rid of the ball quickly. FS Richard Bright brought the pain from the back end of the defense, delivering hard hits and intercepting passes.

Impact Recruits

QB Lucas Poole SO (3.0/4.5)

OT Marquise Hurt FR (2.5/4.0)

K Toby Holland FR (2.0/4.0)

FS Dominique Gibbs FR (2.0/4.0)

OT Jeremy Sutherland FR (1.5/4.0)

DT Dylan Moser FR (1.0/4.0)

OG Preston Keyes FR (1.0/4.0)

WR Delvin Newby FR (1.0/4.0)

C Caleb Kuhn FR (1.0/4.0)

Getting Lucas Poole was a massive win for the Bobcats. He'll Red-Shirt, and then start for 3 Years. This kicks the QB can down the road a couple more years. Marquise Hurt, Jeremy Sutherland, Preston Keyes, and Caleb Kuhn is essentially an entire OL. Hurt may start year one, but if all 4 get Red-Shirted, the Bobcats will have a great OL for 4 years together. Toby Holland was huge too, Kicking has been an issue for Ohio for 2-3 years now. The Bobcats haven't always had great play up the middle on Defense, and picking Moser will help fix that. Delvin Newby will pair well with Poole for 3 years together, and is the natural successor to Barnes.
