[2023] Season in Review: Western Michigan

Coach: @Pskeate

Pre-Season Projection: 10-2

Final Record: 10-3 (7-1), 2nd in MAC West

The Broncos were in great shape to make a play for Playoffs again. With Keith Jackson coming on board, they had the offensive firepower to beat everyone on their schedule. That didn't come to fruition, and even though they had a 10-Win season, it feels disappointing.

Schedule

Their only OOC loss was on the road at Auburn. A hard fought game in which they came up just short. They beat San Diego State to start off the season, and rolled their way through conference play until Week 16. In Week 16, they lost to Central Michigan which eliminated themselves from going to the MACCG. Had they won that game and beat Ohio, I think they would have had a good chance at going to the Playoffs. Instead, they played Temple in the Fricso Bowl. DeSean Madison's career did not end the way he wanted, as they lost that game.

Key Players

QB Keith Jackson (SR) - 233/337 3,188 Yards 69.14% 24 TD 4 INT 169.73 QB Rating  157 Rush Yards 11 TD

RB DeSean Madison (SR) - 294 Carry 1,641 Yards 16 TD 5.58 YPC

WR Viliamu Vainu'upo (FR) - 55 Rec 812 Yards 8 TD 2 Drop

TE William Griggs (FR) - 48 Rec 739 Yards 6 TD 2 Drop

DE Kayden Soriano (SO) - 33 Tackle 11 TFL 11 Sack 1 FF

DT Kevin Pope (JR) - 17 Tackle 8 TFL 5.5 Sack

OLB Christian Reese JR - 32 Tackle 2 TFL 5 Sack 2 PD 1 FF

CB Miles Bradford JR - 18 Tackle 6 INT 1 PD

Jackson was what we thought he could be, and more. Completing over 69% of his passes, while throwing just 4 Picks is ridiculous. The threw for 24 TDs, and rushed for 11 more. DeSean Madison doesn't need much more written about him. We all know what he is. Vainu'upo and Griggs were stellar. The Freshmen combined for over 1,700 Yards with 14 TDs and just 4 Drops. They have reliable hands and are going to be studs for 3 more years. Soriano and Pope were excellent up the middle. They got 50 Tackles with 19 TFL and 16.5 Sacks. Christian Reese was all over the place on defense and locked down the middle of the field. Bradford was a certified Ball Hawk, grabbing 6 Picks. This foursome were fearsome week in and week out.

Impact Recruits

OT Jesse Tackett JR (4.0/5.0)

WR Mason Eckert FR (2.5/5.0)

OT Sam Thrasher FR (1.0/5.0)

OG Antoine Garrett FR (1.0/5.0)

ILB Cardarion Ware FR (1.0/5.0)

P Dillon Vanhorn FR (1.0/5.0)

PR Eli Weston FR (1.0/5.0)

OG Antonio Sauer FR (1.0/4.0)

Tackett is huge for the Broncos. Their OL is losing some guys, and adding an instant starter will help solidify things before the youngsters come on board. Eckert is going to dominate his time in the MAC. I am not looking forward to playing him. Thrasher, Garrett, and Sauer will create a great OL Corps to build around. Ware will fill in for David Goresh when he leaves. Vanhorn will be a huge weapon if he's able to consistently pin opponents deep. Weston can't do much more than return punts, but getting an elite guy there in College is huge.
