[2024] Sun Belt Depth Chart Analysis: Appalachian State

Recommended Posts

1200px-Sun_Belt_logo_in_Appalachian_Stat

That's a series that's going to analyse the Sun Belt's team depth chart, based on the roster for the 2024 season. We start the series analysing the Appalachian State Mountainers:

Disclaimer: The depth chart was made based on the formula used to verify the team’s overall (skill + potential/2), unless, the player was already starting last season, then, I let the player as the starter. In case of a tie, I placed the highest potential player as the starter.

In order to determine if the team uses a 3-4 or 4-3 defense, I compared the second DT to the second ILB. Which one graded higher determined the scheme used.

3. Starters Lost

FB Matthew Gonzalez 6-1 216 (Sr) Maranacook Community (Readfield, ME) 3.0 of 3.0 [Pass Blocking]
OLB James White 5-10 204 Sr Palmerton Area (Palmerton, PA) 2.5 of 2.5 [Blitz]
FS William Slater 5-11 169 Sr North Stokes (Danbury, NC) 2.0 of 2.0 [Zone Coverage]

4. High Point

The improvement on the offensive line, from one season to another, is impressive. The Mountaineers had the worst O.L Rating in the Sun Belt last season (by far), and, now, without losing any starter to graduation, they bring 3 new starters, including Mike Pence, that will be playing in the NFLHC in a few years.

Also, the recruiting class deserves a note. A lot of talent on the skill positions, lead by Darion Holmes, who will be hauting the other Sun Belt Teams in the near future.

5. Low Point

If Appalachian State improved a lot on the OL, the same cannot be said about their DL. Only with 3.0/3.0 players, this is going to be one of the worst sectors of this team in the next season, and focused by the opposed HCs.

6. Overall

The Mountaineers are clearly on their way up. The fact the this team lacked a lot of talent last season is shown by the amount of new players starting right away (the highest amount on the Sun Belt). This may come to bite them in some part of the season, but they are in a MUCH better position for the 2024 season, then they were for the 2023.

App State might have a better offense than me this year. What a difference a year makes. @Nittany Boiler is doing a great job so far

Big improvements from last season, with the right OOC they might compete for a bowl next season.

Nice article and feature series.  Pretty accurate too.  I will probably play DE Chase "Havok" Spurlock (Starter) and OLB Maxim "Tackles" Haines (Back-up) instead of adding to redshirts.  SS Gabriel Conklin 6-2 197 Jr Thomasville (Thomasville NC) 3.0 of 3.0 [Man Coverage] appears to be the more likely SS starter.

It really is unbelievable how little App State lost in terms of starter's and contributor's graduation.  Basically, an underperforming QB and way overperforming OLB (1st team SB as a 2.5/2.5).

Highest point: The biggest takeaway of all is that there are ZERO senior starters (and only one Senior - a Kicker - on the two-deep roster) listed with lots of skilled redshirt help on the way.  22 of 24 listed players could be at full potential after this upcoming season.

Steady the ship for next season (2024) and telling everyone to be ready for 2025!
