[2024] Sun Belt Depth Chart Analysis: UL-Lafayette

Recommended Posts

That's a series that's going to analyse the Sun Belt's team depth chart, based on the roster for the 2024 season. On the third post of the series, we're going to analyse the UL-Lafayette

Disclaimer: The depth chart was made based on the formula used to verify the team’s overall (skill + potential/2), unless, the player was already starting last season, then, I let the player as the starter. In case of a tie, I placed the highest potential player as the starter.

In order to determine if the team uses a 3-4 or 4-3 defense, I compared the second DT to the second ILB. Which one graded higher determined the scheme used.

4. High Point

Lafayette returns their QB, their WR corp, their star DE, and Corey Flaherty, a player that had a lot of interceptions last year. The OL looks like will be improved too, with Ned Murdock entering the line up. We need to see how their coach will act with these players returning.

5. Low Point

UL-Lafayette is the team that lose the most amount of talent in the conference. They are losing 3 players with NFLHC potential, only on the defense, and are not replacing them with the same level of talent. Their defense is the most affected part of the team, their LB corp looks weak, even for Sun Belt standards. The recruiting is subpar too. They bring in Byron Willis, a player with first round potential on NFLHC, but, they need to focus on the quantity too.

6. Overall

Even though UL-Lafayette won the conference in the last few years, I don't think they are going to do it this year. Their coach is one of, if not the best in the conference. but the drop off on the team talent will be too much to overcome.

Lots of senior starters. Recruiting is going to be very important for the Cajuns this year

Definitely gonna be in rebuild mode after this season. I've had some bad luck on recruiting (and some perhaps, unwise decisions made while recruiting too).
