San Diego State Aztecs Spring Game Primer

Recommended Posts

The San Diego State Aztecs have announced their plans and rosters for their upcoming spring game.  As is tradition, the teams are split into "White" and "Black", with the White Team comprised of the first team offense, and the Black Team Comprised of the first team defense.  There are a few wrinkles thrown in, and a few players, due to a lack of depth, may see action both ways.  Here are the players or battles to watch:

Quarterback:  All eyes will be on prized recruit Nick Stewart, as he's been given the keys to the White team offense.  Expected to win the starting job, taking over for all-time program great, David Edmondson, Stewart has a lot of weight on his shoulders this season.  Thankfully for him, the offense is stocked with talent, the offensive line is among the best in the country, he's got one of the nation's best runners to hand the ball off to in A.J. Garrett.

Defensive Line: There is a battle this spring to see who will start along the Aztecs' front line.  True freshman, Richmond Thompson III, has shown flashes in practice that he could be ready to start at the nose.  NFL scouts are intrigued by defensive tackle, Graham Spear's ability to push the pocket and rush the passer, and the Aztecs have used him at defensive end in the past.  The presence of Thompson III along with a very young and inexperienced defensive end position group may find Spear back outside again.  But the emergence of one of those young defensive ends would be a welcomed addition to the defense.  Tion Hairston and Ryan Brock will both get a chance to start in the spring game and a strong performance out of either may help solidify a starting job.

Punter:  Not the most exciting battle, but it's a battle nonetheless.  Chris Rodrigues and Tom Jensen will duke it out for the starting job at punter.
