[2024] Hawaii Rainbow Warriors Welcome QB Mike Lucas from the Transfer Portal

Recommended Posts

OG Jackson Worley 6-5 322 (Sr) Southwest (San Diego CA) 4.0 of 4.0 [Run Blocking]
DE Charles Reid 6-3 264 (Sr) Mid-Pacific Institute (Honolulu HI) 3.5 of 3.5 [Contain]
WR William Huntley 6-0 216 So Mammoth (Mammoth Lakes CA) 3.0 of 3.0 [Target]

Overall, the loss of Worley, Reid, and Huntley won't account for much as all 3 were pushed down the DC by the most recent recruiting classes brought in. Would have been nice depth pieces, however the Rainbow Warriors wish them good luck at their new schools

Virginia: QB Mike Lucas 5-11 233 Sr Dwight Englewood (Englewood NJ) 4.0 of 4.0 [Pocket]

Mike Lucas was a rather polarizing option in the transfer portal. He'll take a RS this season and compete for the starting job in 2024. Below are his career stats.

In 2022 Lucas passed for 3,209 yards, 25 TDs / 8 INTs which is very solid for a 3.0/4.0 true sophomore but seemed to hit somewhat of a slump in 2023 as a JR. While improving his YPA, he was clearly seeing a negative trend in Comp %, Passer Ratings and TD/INT Ratio. He was eventually pulled after 5 games for (FR) 2/5 Jeremy Ellington. Let's look at his games leading up to the benching. (The records and ranking are from years end)

  • Week #1 - 19/26, 308 Yds, 2 TDs, 0 INT - 33 - 0 Win over. 6-6 South Alabama. Camellia Bowl loss to Ball State. UR.
  • Week #2 - 15/25, 152 Yds, 0 TDs, 1 INT - 23 - 20 Win over 6-7 West Virginia. Big 12 runner up, Alamo Bowl loss to Arizona. UR.
  • Week #3 - 14/30, 171 Yds, 0 TDs, 1 INT - 16 - 17 loss to #8 11-3 Illinois. B1G runner up, Rose Bowl win over Oregon.
  • Week #5 - 17/29, 200 Yds, 1 TDs, 1 INT - 17 - 24 loss to #19 9-3 Louisville. ACC Atlantic #2,  Gator Bowl win over Washington State.
  • Week #7 - 18/24, 260 Yds, 3 TDs, 1 INT - 21 - 28 loss to #9 12-1 Duke. ACC Champ. Playoff appearance. Heisman Winner.

It was pretty clear after stumbling to 2-3 following the Duke loss that Lucas may have lost his edge. However looking back he played 3 very good teams down to the wire in Illinois, Louisville and eventual Heisman Bryce Thompson. In his last 4 games he played 3 teams that would end up in their conference championship.  The other was Louisville who had 5 defenders taken, including 3 in the top 38 NFLHC draft picks. The coaching staff likely made the right move given the 3 game slide, but would Lucas have been able to turn things around? We'll look to 2025 in Hawaii to find out.

The Rainbow Warriors current DC:

QB Justin Humphries 6-5 192 (Jr) Konawaena (Kealakekua HI) 3.5 of 3.5 [Hybrid]
QB Lucas Wilson 6-4 224 (Fr) Saint Louis (Honolulu HI) 2.0 of 4.0 [Hybrid]
Redshirt -  QB Aaron Bates 6-5 202 Fr Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks CA) 2.5 of 4.0 [Pocket]

If Humpries is unable to take them where they need and the staff deems Wilson or Bates aren't ready to take the reins, it could be Mike Lucas' shot to prove he can get back to his 2022 form and make a run at being drafted. Hard to pass up a QB with 6,500 yards and 45 TDs in the ACC.
