Rankings from Coaches Poll

The 2016 Big 12 Championship Game was the 4th championship game for the Big 12 Conference. 12th-ranked Texas got revenge for a close defeat in the Red River Shootout earlier in the season, scoring 17 points off of turnovers from the 5th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners en route to a 20-17 win.

Teams

Oklahoma Sooners

Oklahoma became the first team in Big 12 history to successfully defend its division title. After a close season-opening loss to Notre Dame, the Sooners have embarked on an 11-game winning streak and went undefeated in Big 12 play. Quarterback Norris Brooksheer has been one of the best quarterbacks in the nation, and his efforts have made him a Heisman finalist. Meanwhile, Sean Egloff has stepped in to replace Greg Hadnot at halfback, and the balance between Egloff and Brooksheer has been critical to Oklahoma's success.

Texas Longhorns

Texas was the #1 team in the country in the preseason and the favorite to win the Big 12. After a blowout win over Hawaii and a neutral-site win over then-#3 USC to start the season, the Longhorns began to struggle, winning close games over Boston College and North Carolina before dropping consecutive contests to then-winless West Virginia and then-#9 Oklahoma. After those games, Texas abandoned their inefficient pass-heavy offense for a more balanced one, and they won 6 straight games to close out the regular season. Their last two wins were victories over TCU and Oklahoma State, giving them the tiebreaker as all three teams finished 5-2 in conference play. The Longhorns are quarterbacked by Sam Light, and he is joined in the backfield by halfback Troy Booker.
