Rankings from Coaches Poll

The 2017 Big 12 Championship Game was the 5th championship game for the Big 12 Conference. Texas avenged its double-overtime midseason loss to West Virginia, scoring on Troy Marshall's fourth-quarter pick-six to complete a rally from an 11-point deficit to win 24-21 and secure their second consecutive Big 12 title (and their third overall).

Teams

West Virginia Mountaineers

This season had the potential to be one of West Virginia's best ever, but nobody expected it to be this good. They raced out to a 9-0 start, including a 6-0 start in Big 12 play. They beat two-time defending North champion Oklahoma by a 30-20 margin to seize the upper hand in the division, upset then-#1 Texas on the road to take command of it, and then routed Kansas 34-14 in Morgantown to essentially seal the deal. They officially clinched the division in week 12 by escaping Iowa State, 23-21. Their undefeated start was snapped in overtime by TCU, and that loss was followed by a loss to Kentucky. West Virginia finished the regular season with a win over Marshall and a 10-2 record. The Mountaineers were quarterbacked by Richmond King, who is joined in the backfield by "Super" Mario Davis.

Texas Longhorns

Texas was the #1 team in the country in the preseason and the favorite to win the Big 12 for the second straight year. They lived up to expectations, scoring an early marquee win over Florida and dominating most of their competition. The Florida game (23-20) and the West Virginia game (33-30 2OT loss) remain the only games this season that Texas has not won by double digits. They clinched the Big 12 South in week 12 by routing TCU, 33-3, intercepting four passes in the process. They closed out the regular season with a shutout of Oklahoma State and a road rout of Utah State, and they entered the championship game with an 11-1 record, their only loss of the season. The Longhorns were led by quarterback Brad Davis and runningback Troy Booker.
