The American (American Athletic Conference) is a CFBHC Group of 5 conference.
History
At its founding, the AAC included 12 schools and stretched 4,861 miles (Mānoa, HI to Greenville, NC). From it's founding, the conference was the so called mid-majors with member institutions in Ohio, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Texas, Colorado, Idaho, California, and Hawaii. The Boise State Broncos won the inaugural AAC Championship Game.
For 2015 the conference will add the Connecticut Huskies, Fresno State Bulldogs, New Mexico Lobos, and Nevada Wolf Pack. SMU and UConn joined the East division, Fresno State, New Mexico, and UNR joined the West.
Following a series of airport meetings, the AAC split up in 2016, with the Western Division forming the Mountain West Conference. The AAC added a number of teams to replace the departing schools, including Tulane, Temple, Marshall, and NIU. In 2017, NIU left for the MAC, but USF, Tulsa, and Memphis joined to bring AAC membership up to 14. However, towards the end of the 2017 season, the Conference USA was founded, effective in 2018, and Marshall and Rice announced their departures to the new league while Georgia State simply withdrew from the AAC. Navy was moved in to replace the departing members, and bring membership back to 12.
