High school career
Herrmann attended New Ulm High School in New Ulm, Minnesota, with a relatively small enrollment of 523 students. Herrmann did not receive much notice from Division I schools early in his recruitment.
Recruitment
Herrmann's only Division I offer was from the University of Pittsburgh, which was ultimately where Herrmann attended school.
College career
2014 Season
Herrmann redshirted the 2014 season, as coach Jumbo wanted to see him progress in practice before committing to giving him playing time.
2015 Season
Herrmann impressed the coaches enough in practice to get the start over incumbent junior Christopher Nieves. Herrmann exceeded expectations, recording 7 sacks, a Pitt record for one season and a Pitt career record. He was named to the All-ACC 2nd team.
