High school career
Donald Caldwell attended Junius H. Rose in Greenville, North Carolina. Caldwell was a 2 year starter for the Rampants, who have a history of producing NFL level talent. Caldwell threw for 2,466 yards and 31 touchdowns his junior year en route to a 7-3 record, and threw for 2,902 yards and 35 touchdowns his senior year, leading the team to the 4A North Carolina state semi-finals. He was a 4 star recruit coming out of high school and narrowed his choices to NC State, Wake Forest, and South Carolina before choosing the Wolfpack on National signing day.
College career
2013 season
Caldwell was the backup quarterback for the Wolfpack in 2013 behind Mike Hill after redshirting in 2012.
2014 season
Caldwell saw his first game action in 2014 as he was named the starter in the preseason as a redshirt sophmore. He had a good first year throwing for over 2,400 yards and 13 touchdowns with a 63.8 completion percentage as he led the Wolfpack to a 6-6 season.
2015 season
Caldwell continued to improve and gain confidence his junior year as the starter for the Wolfpack in 2015. He was still underutilized mostly due to poor coaching, but still threw for 2,922 yards and 21 Touchdowns as the Wolfpack finished the year with a hugely disappointing 4-8 record. The Wolfpack hired a new coach, brightfalls, with 2 games to go in the season, and Caldwell was noticeably more appreciative of the direction the program was going with the new hire.
