Wegert was generally considered one of the top QBs available, though most considered Aaron Devereaux to be the top QB available. There were a few pundits that ranked Wegert as the top QB available.
Draft
The Jets traded up to #1 overall prior to the draft, and most thought that they would select a QB. The Jets selected Wegert with this pick.
2016 Season
Wegert was named Jets starting QB going into the year with the trade of Aaron Kotar.
He led the Jets to one of their most successful seasons in franchise history as the Jets finished 8-4. Wegert finished highly in most Rookie of the Year voting.
2017 Season
Wegert built a bit on his rookie year, finishing solidly but not spectacularly as he struggled a bit with #1 WR Jim Umenyiora going out for the year early in the season. He led the Jets to a second straight playoff appearance where they once again lost in the Wild Card round. He struggled a bit with hand injuries during the year, missing Week 17 with the injury.
2018 Season
Wegert looked to build a rapport with new receivers Paul Howell and (mid-season acquisition) Ken Brown. In a Week 10 Monday Night game against the Oakland Raiders, Wegert was injured by Raiders defensive tackle Fred Romanowski. He missed the next 5 games, but the Jets were still able to hang on and earn a first round bye in his absence. He won every regular season game he started, going 11-0.
2019 Season
Wegert was injured in game #2 and missed 2 games early in the season as the Jets struggled to a 1-4 start. This was the first 3000 yard season of Wegert's career. However, after being 4-5 going into Week 11 the Jets won 10 straight games going into Super Bowl VI, though the Jets lost the game 27-30.
