Draft

Otero was selected in the 3rd round of the 2015 NFLHC Draft by the Miami Dolphins.

Miami Dolphins

James Otero won the starting job from Mario Rattay in the 2015 NFL preseason. He won Super Bowl II his rookie season, rushing for over 1000 yards.

He was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2017 offseason in a package deal that included Ron Mobley for Marcus Barry and Jason Bryant

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Otero started for three seasons with the Buccaneers. He experienced a major resurgence in 2017, but struggled to stay on the field afterward. In 2018 and 2019 combined, he played just 18 of 32 possible regular-season games. He performed well despite his injury in 2018, but recorded his lowest yards-per-carry average of his career before a season-ending Achilles injury in 2019. After the season, he was traded to the Detroit Lions for a third-round pick.

Detroit Lions

Entering the 2020 season, Otero is the presumptive starter in Detroit. He was joined in the backfield by rookie Logan Pruitt from North Carolina and second-year Calvin Jones from Georgia Tech.

Indianapolis Colts

Halfway through the 2021 season, the Indianapolis Colts traded for Otero in hopes of a deep playoff push. He started for the whole 2022 Season, rushing for one of his career lows (620 Yards). He was named the starter prior to the 2023 Season before the Colts traded for J.B. Blacknall. After which Otero was made the #2 RB on the Roster and had very limited carries the rest of the season.

Retirement

Following the 2023 Season, Otero decided to retire 9 Seasons. He finished his career with over 8,000 Rushing Yards and 77 Touchdowns.
