Professional Career
Pre-Draft
Smith was not considered one of the top QBs, though he was expected to be drafted.
2014 Season
Though he did not have the greatest statistical season, Smith managed to lead the Jets to the playoffs. In addition to this, and despite his 6/7 TD/INT ratio, Smith managed to make the Pro Bowl. Since many disagreed with the decision and thought other QBs were snubbed, he received the joking nickname, "Pro Bowl Quarterback Onterrio Smith."
2015 Season
Smith was benched for newly drafted QB Aaron Kotar to begin 2015. However, as Kotar struggled a bit to start the season, Smith came in for the Jets two road games - at New England and at Miami. His performance was so bad that he was immediately re-benched for Kotar. He did start the final game of the season, where he went 18/27 for 284 yards and 1 TD while adding 8 rushes for 83 yards and 2 TD on the ground.
2016 Season
Following the trade of Kotar, Smith backed up newly acquired Erik Wegert, appearing in just one game.
2017 Season
Following the 2016 season, Smith rejected the Jets re-signing offer and became a free agent. He signed with the Steelers on a 1 year, $8 million contract. Smith started the first 11 games for the Steelers before being replaced by his former backup at Miami Rob Corp.
