Lehr was selected with the 52nd pick in the 2014 NFLHC Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Professional career

Cincinnati Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals focused on the linebacker corps in the inaugural draft, selecting Nick Upshaw in the 2nd round while also taking Lehr and Ray Truax in the 4th round. Upshaw and Lehr made an immediate impression and were both selected to the 2014 Pro Bowl. But after a disappointing 2015 season, Lehr was traded to the Detroit Lions for outside linebacker Germane Dixon and a swap of 7th rounders.

Detroit Lions

Lehr spent two seasons with the Lions and was an above average performer. Lehr was then a key piece of a blockbuster trade after the 2017 season, sending Andre Brooks to the Detroit Lions and sending Lehr, Mark Craig, and a 4th round pick which was used to select WR George Lewis.

New England Patriots

Lehr was unable to capture the success he had in his rookie season while in New England. He was a starting OLB for the Patriots for four seasons. After week 16 in the 2021 season, Lehr announced his plans to retire at the end of the season. Lehr cited a recent toe injury catalyzed his decision to retire.
