robcarlson77

robcarlson77 is the current Head Coach of the Central Michigan Chippewas football team. He is also the former head coach of the Northern Illinois Huskies and Northwestern Wildcats.

College Coaching Career

robcarlson77 earned his first head coaching position at Northern Illinois prior to the 2019 season. In his first year as coach, the Huskies struggled to find consistency and finished with a 4-8 (2-6) record.

Despite the poor start to his coaching career, robcarlson77 was offered the position of head coach at Northwestern prior to the 2020 season. Northwestern had been plagued by coaching turnover and was too much for the the coach to overcome as the team limped to a 1-11 (1-8) record.

Negativity was abound prior to the 2021 season, but thanks to the play of junior QB, E.J. McGuire, the Wildcats surprised many finishing the season 6-7 (3-6). The Wildcats earned their first bowl bid under robcarlson77, but were easily handled by Virginia Tech in the Pinstripe Bowl losing 42-23.

Hoping to build off their bowl appearance, Wildcat faithful were cautiously optimistic heading into the 2022 season. With QB E.J. McGuire entering his fourth season as a starter, a second bowl birth seemed like a good possibility, despite major attrition on the offensive line. The Wildcats finished the 2022 campaign with a 7-6 (4-5) record defeating Louisville 27-24 in the Detroit Bowl. The 2022 season also brought Northwestern their first victory over in-state rival Illinois. The 24-20 victory was the teams first win over Illinois since the 2018 season.

In a surprise announcement, robcarlson77 announced his resignation from Northwestern one day after the teams victory in the Detroit Bowl. He would be named the head coach at his alma mater, Central Michigan University, one day later.
