History
I'm Ron Burgandy. AMA? (2014)
I'm Ron Burgandy. AMA? was the first coach to take over the Aztecs. After a disappointing 0-3 start, they were run out of town by the fans.
mblewis (2014)
Coach mblewis took over midseason, and led the Aztecs to 3 victories in 9 games, ending with a 3-9 record. Following the season, they resigned as head coach.
Vacant (2015)
San Diego State was coachless for the first 9 games of the 2015 season amassing a 2-7 record.
vollmagnet (2015)
Coach vollmagnet took over the last two games, splitting them at 1-1 before resigning.
Harvey Fagan (2015)
Coach Fagan took over for the final game of the 2015 season, losing in his only matchup, 14-35.
Wooden (2016-2017)
Coach Wooden gave the Aztecs two seasons of stability, including an 11-3 record in 2016. 2016 was the best season for the Aztecs resulting in a berth in the CCG against ranked Air Force, and a loss in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl against Oklahoma State. After a disappointing 6-7 campaign in 2017, and a loss in the Navy National Bowl against Toledo, Wooden resigned with an all time record of 17-9.
pnewport (2018)
Coach pnewport was hired to start the 2018 season and never really got the hang of gameplanning. After getting the Aztecs to an 0-6 start, they retired midseason, clearing the path for stability and competition in San Diego.
Pumph (2018-present)
Coach Pumph was hired amid a terrible season and managed to salvage what was left. In the final 6 games, he led the Aztecs to a 3-3 record, and a 3-9 record overall. Pumph seemed to be a miracle worker, and oversaw major improvement in 2019, amassing a 8-5 record, and SDSU's first ever bowl win in the New Mexico Bowl against Western Kentucky. 2020 was a disappointing 4-8 season for the Aztec faithful as the the empty cupboards from the previous coaching regimes made it hard to compete. 2021 led to marked improvement as more of Pumph's recruits took the field, culminating in a 9-4 record, and a win in the Hawaii Bowl against Western Kentucky. 2022 really displayed what coach Pumph had built, as the Aztecs stormed to a 13-0 mark, a Mountain West Conference title, and a berth in the College Football Playoff. The Aztecs were no match for the powerful Oklahoma Sooners, as they lost 38-13. Returning most of their production, and looking to prove they belong among the elite, the Aztecs scheduled a brutal out of conference slate for 2023, and felt flat all season long, limping to a record of 9-5 and a Bowl win. The lone bright spot being the team's second consecutive West Division Championship.
