Sterling Brown is a retired American football running back who played for the New York Giants and New Orleans Saints. He played college football at Texas. The New York Giants selected him with the 33rd overall pick in the 2016 NFLHC Draft.

College Career

Brown attended Texas for four years. The Texas offense ran through Brown during his first year as a starter in 2013. The sophomore running back finished fourth in carries (275), fifth in rushing yards (1,601), and sixth in rushing touchdowns (19). He was named the Offensive Player of the Year for the Big 12. Brown also won the Doak Walker Award and was named an All-American. The Longhorns required much less of Brown in 2014. In his second year as the team's starter, his carries were cut drastically. He remained effective, rushing for his second consecutive 1000-yard season and setting a career-high with 24 rushing touchdowns. Brown saw his workload dramatically increase in his final season on campus. He was tasked with 365 carries, the most in the country. The standout senior rewarded his coaching staff with over 2,000 total yards from scrimmage and 23 touchdowns. His success as the Texas workhorse earned Brown his second Doak Walker Award, as well as his second All-American honor. He graduated and entered the NFL Draft after the 2015 season.

Draft

Brown was selected in the 2nd round of the 2016 NFLHC Draft by the New York Giants. He was the third running back taken overall in 2016. Brown signed a 4 year, $18 million deal.

New York Giants

Brown showed flashes of potential in his rookie season with the New York Giants having 11 TDs in a 12 game season. The other top rookie RBs (Akili Wallace, Marcus Barry, Jerry Rambo, Fred Tindale) showed a bit more than Brown, though. The Giants won the division with Thomas Wheeler leading the offense. Heading into his second season, the Giants traded Wheeler to the Chiefs which showed a lot of trust in Sterling Brown. Brown had the best season of his career with his expanded portion of the offense. He was top ten in the league in yards and touchdowns while top three in YPC. Brown was forced to carry the offense as the Giants passing attack struggled behind Aaron Kotar and Dick Cook. The Giants drafted R.J. Stanford to lead the team into 2018. Brown suffered a Lisfranc injury on Monday Night Football in week 5 and missed about half the season. Brown was on pace to have another successful but not Pro Bowl caliber season. After the season, the Giants traded Brown to the New Orleans Saints for a 2nd round, 5th round, and 6th round pick.

New Orleans Saints

With a fresh start in New Orleans and a strong QB in Aaron Devereaux, Brown looked to take the next step towards becoming a star RB. He had a promising first season in New Orleans but began to falter as the Saints leaned more on Deveareaux and the passing attack to control the offense. Brown was never able to take it to the next level and become the dominant running back that he was in college. After splitting time with rookie DeSean Dockery in 2022, Brown was not offered an extension by the Saints. He decided to retire rather than hit free agency.
