The Tampa Bay Lightning were one of the original 16 teams introduced in the 2020 inaugural season for the NHLHC. They are currently the only southern team in the Eastern Conference. Beginning the 2021 season, they play in the Atlantic Division with Buffalo Sabres, Columbus Blue Jackets, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings. Syracuse Crunch will begin official play as a minor league affiliate for the Lightning starting 2021.

Tampa Bay Lightning owner,UBL, won a bid for a franchise as one of the original 16 teams, and brought the team to the bay area. Quickly following the announcement, Quasar was made the first General Manger of the Lightning. Weeze was announced soon after as the first Headcoach.
