College career
Canfield committed to the Rice Owls and redshirted his first season on campus in 2017. He spent the 2018 season behind Koren Donahue. Canfield earned the starting position in 2019 and led the team in interceptions with 3. He remained the starter through his junior and senior season. After graduation, he decided to take an assistant graduate coaching job instead of trying for the NFLHC.
